Spanish Language Workshop: Digital Transformation Strategies to Accelerate Time-To-Market for New Fiber Deployments

Wednesday, October 24
9:00 AM-10:00 AM
Room B405

Service providers are setting aggressive goals for fiber deployments that are essential to short term growth and long term competitive viability, but are struggling with the volume and complexity of work in the planning and design as well as the dependence on large teams of skilled resources. Operators have been following the same construction process for many decades. Current strategies, processes and tools rely heavily on manual processes and paper documentation which can result in delays, mistakes, repeat designs and poor plant documentation. We will discuss strategies to automate designs with integrated field tools for walkouts and construction. These strategies have proven to dramatically cut costs, enhance network maintenance and accelerate the design and construction process.

Tuesday, October 23
12:00 PM–12:30 PM
Exhibit Hall, Innovation Theater

Small, midsize, and rural providers are essential to ubiquitous cable and telecommunications services but face unique issues in fulfillment of that mandate. These operators succeed in environments that lack the economies of scale of their larger brethren, and they often face technology, policy, and competitive scenarios that are specific to their groups, or even to a few operators in a given locale. What main challenges face these operators? How is the competitive landscape evolving, and what services are being deployed to counter other providers? How are their unique needs shaping innovative adoption of technology? What policy headwinds are they facing?

Business Continuity: Reflecting on Natural Disaster Responses

Wednesday, October 24
3:30 PM–5:00 PM
Room B404

Disaster Discussion

“In 2017, the U.S. experienced a rare combination of high disaster frequency, disaster cost, and diversity of weather and climate extreme events,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Cable operators must continually prepare and respond throughout the year to address the impact of natural disasters. The size and scale of the challenges faced from hurricanes and wildfires put even the best plans to the test.

In this session, several leading cable operators will detail the challenges they faced, how they worked through the preparation, response, and recovery phases, their lessons learned, and the next steps being taken to make them more resilient. For cable operators, this session will also highlight the importance of building strong cross-sector relationships especially with power providers and offices of emergency management. Finally, this session will be fortunate to include a senior DHS official to review the After Action Report (AAR) from the historic 2017 hurricane season and discuss lessons learned.
