You’re Stealing My Business!

Track: Security and Authentication

DOCSIS® theft of service is costing operators millions in lost revenue and opex costs. A recent POC effort with a major US operator showed upward of 450,000 rogue devices on the network. Lacking the security features of modern-day set-top boxes, cable modems can be, and are, manipulated. This allows multiple theft of services, as well as content that can be resold on the black market. We'll examine how to detect and prevent theft of services and content.   We discuss how cable operators can ensure that their OTT platforms are not being used against them by commercial content pirates and hackers. And finally, we will explain how the implementation of fingerprinting and watermarking technologies is employed in the identification of specific video assets.

Ethernet Mid-Mile Aggregation Architecture Enables You to Get More From Your HFC Network

In today’s intense, competitive environment, cable operators have a competitive advantage—the HFC Network. Designed to provide 1 GHz of bandwidth to the home, the HFC network has been carrying video, voice, and data services for decades. With new platforms and technologies like virtual CCAP and DOCSIS® 3.1, these fiber-rich networks will have the ability to transport 1 Gbps to the home. However, there is a problem lurking on the horizon. As cable operators drive fiber deeper into their networks, they cannot lose sight of the fact that eventually all of their new fiber access lines will need to be aggregated. This presentation will explore how cable operators can leverage the Ethernet mid-mile aggregation architecture and the statistical multiplexing benefits of Ethernet switching to cost effectively aggregate their commercial and residential networks onto their metro cores and beyond.

Navigating America’s Coming Broadband Cybergeddon

Fiber is the next frontline in the battle to enable ever greater Internet speeds and capacity. As demand for ubiquitous connectivity increases, cable operators are faced with multiple, increasingly complex architectural choices. Synergies among DAA, R-PHY, FTTH, deep fiber deployments, and adjacent services in an “unlimited” broadband world are creating new challenges. Corning and ARRIS will bring clarity and suggestions for a cleaner approach to smart infrastructure design and deployment.

Why Virtualize Cable Access Now?

Headends and hub-sites are space and power constrained, and MSOs face the daunting question, “How to efficiently increase network capacity and agility to accommodate data demand and introduce new services?” Through network virtualization, MSOs can take control of network scaling, opening doors to innovative services while also improving the customer’s experience. Intel and Comcast will show how moving to a virtual CCAP is not only technically feasible, power efficient, and highly scalable but will also enable deployment of new edge-based applications at a faster pace with lower cost, lower power, and greater efficiency.

Accelerating Cable Applications With Cloud, Containers & Culture

As OTT streaming options increase in quality and numbers, the video landscape is transforming rapidly. The success of streaming has been largely a result of the speed with which companies like Netflix can build and deploy customer-facing applications. Driving this speed and the fierce competition it is creating has been adoption of cloud services and devops practices that enable fast delivery of hyper-tuned software and experiences. Now, cable companies are undertaking a similar transformation as they build, deliver, and host consumer video software applications to keep pace with an unprecedented rate of change and innovation. This panel will feature top cable operator executives discussing the state of cloud technologies in cable operations, including public and private cloud infrastructure services, container- and PaaS-based application development, and the growing devops movement.

Understanding Service Assurance in an Agile, On-Demand Service Delivery Environment

As cable/MSO networks evolve to support new services, new challenges arise. Most pressing is the need to understand the user experience. With the move toward more agile networks through virtualization, software-defined, and self-optimizing networks, maintaining visibility and understanding end-to-end performance become even more difficult. With the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) and an explosion in the number of devices and sensors attaching to a network, the challenge only grows more complex and makes a Service Assurance strategy immediately imperative. Dr. Saksena will look at the challenges operators face with service assurance in this new, hyper-converged world of networking and share how cable/MSO operators can “stay ahead of the curve.”

Leveraging Virtual Security Infrastructure to Secure Your Cable Clouds and Clients

As our industry transitions into the cloud-connected era, which is enabling billions of devices and end users to be connected to the Internet, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)-based platforms and applications are gaining traction. This is because they provide game-changing ways for service providers to ease the ever-growing bandwidth demands of greater functionality, improve service delivery and consistency, cut operational costs, and slash time to market for new services and applications. However, as cable operators shift to software-based, virtualized infrastructure, security is a key element. They will need to ensure the security of their own networks while providing greater security to their end users as well. This presentation will explore next-generation virtual security architectures and examine how cable operators can leverage a virtual security infrastructure to secure their virtual environments and deploy new managed security services in their networks as well.

A Discussion of Strategies to Meet Broadband Demand Today… and in the Future

As service providers consider the ROI for network upgrades designed to provide increased broadband performance, they seek creative ways to extend capital dollars. Construction investment should be leveraged to get the most out of the time spent in the field. This presentation will discuss ways to grow today’s deployed plant while leveraging installations to position future growth as well. New products and techniques allow today’s OSP installation to be leveraged throughout the continuum of a network’s evolution. Our discussion focuses on how OSP installations can provide the connectivity needed initially and may also position future growth strategies. Future network topologies can be more cost-effectively addressed by ensuring that the investment necessary today may be leveraged to avoid costly rework of the same network route in the future.

Traffic Engineering Optimization II

Track: Evolved Network-Wireline and Wireless

We'll introduce STEM-ML to face the increasing demand of both our Internet broadband and IPTV (Flow) services. This tool makes use of machine-learning techniques to characterize the nodes that integrate our network. Based on such characterization, we can define the technological and commercial strategy for the access network to address demand. Plus, we'll look at a year’s worth of live consumer data collected from a single cable site and will investigate many bandwidth trends. We'll discuss how this impacts existing network capacity models and how they might morph to provide traffic engineering in a fiber-deep gigabit world.
