SESSIONS
Tues., June 24
7 a.m.-4:15 p.m.
Pennsylvania Convention Center
More than ever before, operators are leveraging technology to improve the customer experience. In order to work more efficiently, field technicians are spending more time closer to customers and less time in the office. The deployment of state-of-the-art technology in the form of mobile devices offers a new medium-and new opportunities-to the learning and development (L&D) community.
Mobile learning, or mLearning, is the use of mobile technologies to enhance the learning experience. SCTE Conference on Broadband Learning and Development (CBL&D) 2008 is all about being mobile, from leveraging the mobile devices such as PDAs and laptops for training and communications purposes, to delivering training to where the workforce resides.
For those who are tasked with delivering training on new technologies, the Tutorial Tuesday
technical sessions may interest you. The Tutorial Tuesday sessions will be conducted
simultaneously with the afternoon CBL&D breakout sessions. CBL&D registrants are
eligible to attend these tutorials in addition to or in lieu of the L&D sessions; so, an attendee
can attend either two of the CBL&D sessions, two of technical tutorials, or one of each. Each
technical tutorial and afternoon CBL&D breakout session will be presented twice
(see schedule below for times).

Hitting a Moving Target: Serving the Mobile Learner
Our opening session addresses the unique needs of mobile learners, explains the challenges we face in reaching them, and explores the tools and techniques that will enable us to deliver rich, collaborative learning solutions to them. Benefits of on-demand applications for training programs will be evaluated, and best practices for the delivery of packaged tools and content to the mobile learner will be analyzed.

Go Mobile! Getting Started on the Road to mLearning
This session attempts to dispel perceived barriers to successful mobile learning deployment in the cable industry by leveraging existing tools to advance mobile learning initiatives in a common-sense, low-risk manner. Participants will learn about real-life examples of mLearning applications successfully deployed around the globe, explore potential industry applications available today, and create a positive plan and change management strategy to move their own initiative forward.
Presenter: Richard D. Maher, President, Maher & Maher

Taking Advantage of the Computer Medium to Provide Meaningful Learning Experiences
This case study will review Pangrac & Associates' experiences with designing, building, and deploying software-based programs for technician training, skills development, and mobile technical reference. Such programs have the ability to combine graphics, video, and sound with text to form an enhanced interactive process to maximize the amount of information retained by the student, to an extent not easily matched in a classroom. These real-world field experiences will help support training for younger adults who may be intimidated by the classroom setting.
Presenter: Donald T. Gall, CTO, Pangrac & Associates Development Inc.

CBL&D Breakout Session 1 and Tutorial Tuesday Session 1
The Tutorial Tuesday sessions will be conducted simultaneously with the afternoon CBL&D breakout sessions. Attendees can attend either one CBL&D session or one Tutorial Tuesday session during the timeframe.
CBL&D Breakout Sessions
Powerful Facilitation for the Millennial Generation
Are you in touch with the newest frontline employees joining your organization? While the traditional training methods of years past are easier to deliver, they can be severely limiting in their effectiveness with the "Guitar Hero" audience. "Powerful Facilitation for the Y Generation" will offer you fresh ideas and a new perspective on the training experience. Come prepared to be challenged and take your training to Generation Next.
Presenter: Rich LaPat, Regional Vice President, Learning & Development, Comcast Cable Communications
Engaging Leadership in Safety
This session will provide resources needed to establish a true safety culture through implementation of seven key steps:
- Having a safety vision
- Safety planning and goal setting
- Organizational perceptions
- Responsibilities and accountability
- Measurement systems
- Response to behavior (safe/unsafe)
- Education and training and staff development
Presenter: Ernie Doggett, CES, CUSA, ECI, EMT-FR, Safety Specialist, Comcast Cable Communications
Acquiring, Training, and Retaining Top Performing Employees
High employee churn negatively affects the health of entire organizations by creating excessive costs related to recruiting, hiring and training. Further, tuition assistance is both an employee benefit and a tool that can be used by an organization to reduce employee churn. This session will demonstrate how organizations can actually save money by encouraging advanced training and education of its employees. In addition, there will be a panel discussion that will be open to questions regarding experiences with tuition assistance, including real life scenarios of how this affected the company's bottom line. Investment in continued employee growth leads to improved job performance, instead of investing heavily in the training and development of a constant flow of newly hired employees.
Presenter: Alan Babcock, Vice President, Learning Solutions, Jones/NCTI
Panelist: Marianne McClain, Baker Installations and Millie Stephens, Senior Director, Contractor Management, Comcast Cable Communications
Tutorial Tuesday Sessions
BER and MER Fundamentals
Have you wondered what those sometimes mysterious abbreviations BER and MER mean? Curious about the difference between them? This pre-conference tutorial explains what BER and MER are, how these parameters are measured, and how they can be used to troubleshoot various digitally modulated signal impairments in the outside plant.
Presenter: Ron Hranac, Technical Leader, Cisco Systems
IP for Video Heads
If video is your game, but you still tend to think in RF, you need this session. Learn how differences in bridged vs. routed networks impact IP video delivery. Brush up on the ABCs of ARP and PING-two fundamental IP video protocols. Get your head into the pros and cons of UDP vs. RTP, as alternative video encapsulations. The bottom line: That thing we all used to call "broadcasting" is morphing into multicasting, unicasting, and the language of IP.
Presenter: Dave Brown, Solutions Marketing Manager, Cisco Systems
PacketCable™ 2.0 vs. IMS: Differentiation and Co-Existence in a Convergent World
This tutorial provides insight into how the PacketCable™ 2.0 architecture operates to enable exciting new multimedia, multiparty, and multimodal services. Key characteristics of the PacketCable™ 2.0 architecture from how session management behaves to the unique policy management infrastructure are compared and contrasted to the IMS architecture. Specific service examples are used to illustrate how PacketCable™ 2.0 coexists with IMS and non-IMS networks to expand service capabilities and what the considerations are to assure that the customer experience is preserved while delivering services across different access types.
Presenters: Pete Quigley, Senior Director, Cedar Point Communications and Richard Cardone, Vice President, Marketing Programs, Camiant
Virtual Learning In-Depth Exploration
During Dr. Martha Soehren's keynote address, attendees will be provided a glimpse into a number of the virtual learning opportunities some operators have developed to engage their employees in a safe learning environment to improve their knowledge and skills. This hands-on workshop will provide attendees the opportunity for more in-depth exploration of the learning solutions discussed.
Note: This session will be offered during breakout session 1 only.
