Leveraging Web 2.0 Technologies and Communities of Practice to Advance Skills Training

The development of Web 2.0 technologies is a growing trend that has captured the imagination and interest of learning professionals. Social online communities, such as MySpace, Facebook, and LinkedIn, have engaged millions of users; however, are they just for the young and only for social interactions, or do they offer learning professionals a model for fostering relevant and timely learning and collaboration? This session will advance the idea of a social learning community. Each participant will leave the session with the knowledge of how Web 2.0 technologies and online social communities might be utilized to advance his or her most pressing professional development challenges, and how such an initiative might be planned and executed.

Web 2.0 Technologies — Lessons From the Field

Web 2.0 technologies and other e–tools offer flexible and timely ways to deliver information, but the diversity of audiences, delivery devices, and learning styles makes it challenging to develop and deliver tools that will be accepted and used by potential learners. This panel will discuss real-world lessons learned and success stories of actual implementations of Web 2.0 and e–learning technologies in the cable industry.

Creating Balance Between Social Learning and Traditional Learning

Learning and Development organizations within the cable telecommunications industry have unique challenges that will require them to use a variety of Web technologies to save time and money yet keep employees informed and engaged in the learning process. The presentation will focus on discussing three areas: (1) building a toolkit for managers; (2) creating a social learning event for learners; and (3) reviewing Web 2.0 technologies. This presentation will give the audience ideas about creating time-saving programs and hands-on tools and will provide suggestions to stakeholders, managers, and end–user employees who are involved and excited about employee learning and development.
