Engineering Session: Engineering the Extensible Network

Integrated and converged services are the future of cable telecommunications. Customers today want to not only see the silos come down, but to also see services that adapt to their lifestyles and the multiple devices they use. The challenge is to integrate these services in such a way that the back-end provisioning and processing are transparent to them. This requires an intelligent back-office infrastructure that can manage the entire process including adapting video streams to the consuming device format. While all of this has technology solutions that can be implemented on a single converged network, operationalizing the technology is yet another hurdle on the road to success. A successful deployment means that a solid business model is in place and that all affected staff members understand the implication for their area of practice.

This engineering session takes a few converged-services examples and breaks down the implications to engineering on a common network infrastructure from headend to CPE, outlines an approach to operationalize from service delivery elements through to the back office, and highlights many of the critical implications.
